How to Heal Yourself by Helping Others, 4 Ways to Give Back When you Want to Give Up

In the year 2014, Americans spent almost $3.7 billion on anxiety drugs, therapies and over-the-counter products aimed at treating anxiety disorders. The anti-panic attack industry reaches billions in sales each and every year, yet people are still searching for a cure.

I suffered from panic attacks and depression for 20 years and have contributed to that $3.7 billion on anxiety drugs. Nothing worked for me until I found the healing in serving others and the answer, I found, doesn’t cost a thing!

I have talked in previous posts about holistic methods to treat depression and anxiety and provide useful tools in them like How to Go From a Depressed, Anxious Mom, To a Relaxed, Peaceful Mom in Just 4 Steps Without Medication! In addition to those, volunteering became the most rewarding and life changing experience.

Depression and anxiety turn your world upside down and service broadens your perspective and alleviates negative emotions. In this post we will learn to give back in 4 ways by:

  • Gratitude with Visualization
  • Align With Your Passion
  • Discovering Dharma
  • The 25/75 Principle

Research has shown that volunteering offers many health benefits by improving physical and mental health, providing a sense of purpose and teaches valuable skills and nurtures new and existing relationships.

Finding your passion and serving others is a key to healing. In addition to giving back when you want to give up you can try the The Panic Miracle System which has worked for so many and is by far the most comprehensive and effective system found online and in the physical world. It is the ONLY holistic step-by-step roadmap to permanent panic attacks and anxiety freedom in existence. Adding volunteering to my toolbox to fight my anxiety is the most satisfying part of this journey and I am grateful for finding my purpose. Giving to others is a way to show your gratitude for what you have.

Step1 Gratitude with Visualization

Over the course of the week, write down every place where you spend time. Open your eyes to the service opportunities by looking for one in every circumstance. Pick an opportunity that interests you. Service connects us and amplifies gratitude. It gives you a broad view of everything you have. Selflessness heals the self. Try this gratitude visualization.

  1. A small kindness someone did to you
  2. A gift that mattered to you
  3. Something that makes your day a little bit brighter

Step 2 Align with Your Passion

Service increases compassion. When you serve, you see that the world needs what you have to offer. Helping others tells you that you are making a difference in the world, and you have a meaning and a purpose. When you feel ready to give up, finding a purpose can be your reason to carry on.

I recently lost my father, and he died while on hospice. I respected the staff of the hospice company so much that I asked how I could get involved in their organization. I took my sorrow for losing my dad and turned that energy into something positive when giving back to others. I see him in every face I help. I turned my pain into power, and you can do this with an organization that serves you. A women’s shelter, food bank, nursing home etc.

Step 3 Discovering Dharma

As you may have guessed from my website name Monk Mamas, I hold monks in high regard because they practice “selfless sacrifice” Dharma is an Indian word with a few different meanings, but my interpretation of Dharma is simply “your truth”. I believe depression can be a symptom of living a lie or being someone you aren’t for so long your body gets uncomfortable and uses anxiety to wake you up out of this lie you are living in. When you find your Dharma and live in it; it is hard to be depressed. Your Dharma is always with you, and you might use a formula of:

Passion+Expertise+Usefulness=Dharma.

I was able to find my Dharma while helping others because your intentions are pure, and thoughts are clearer when you are giving yourself to others.

Step 4 The 25/75 Principle

This principle is to surround yourself with people who push you to grow. For every negative person in your life have 3 uplifting people. Aim for the feeling that at least 75 percent of the people you spend time with are bringing you up. When I was battling depression, I found other mothers that were my role models. I was in a dark place but being around uplifting people reminded me that it didn’t have to stay that way.

When serving others, you usually are with like-minded individuals and once you live a life of self service one’s intentions are positive, and it is addictive.

To get started Giving Back versus Giving Up you can reach out to local churches who are often affiliated with different opportunities to get you started in volunteering. Once you get started you will feel a peace that  has long evaded you.

Along with self- service and meditation the Panic Miracle changed everything for me.
